Bridge Builder is a puzzle video game series, created by indie developer Alex Austin. Bridge Builder is the first in the series, followed by four sequels in different versions. They were developed and published by Chronic Logic, the only exception being Bridge Project, which was developed by Invent4 Entertainment. Some of the games also feature secondary publishers.

The objective of each game is to construct a bridge which a train may cross over, given a limited budget and materials.

    Gameplay

Each level is composed of a section of land, such as a river or chasm, and an initially laid track that shows the train's starting and ending points. A number of anchor points in and around the chasm are where the player anchors the bridge from. Should the player's train cross the bridge successfully and under budget, the level is passed. Later games add additional constraints such as a boat that must pass underneath between two consecutive train crossings.

Although Bridge Builder only allows the player steel beams, bridges in later installments can be created using a variety of materials. Along with varying strengths of steel, the player can also use cable or hydraulics that expand or contract for some purpose, such as to allow a ship to pass underneath the bridge. In all games, the player is constrained by a budget that determines the maximum amount of material that can be used and still pass the level.

There is no penalty for failing a level; the player may try and test infinitely many different designs before finding one that succeeds. A poorly designed bridge may break as soon as the player begins to test it, unable to support its own weight. While testing the bridge, the stress on each section can be seen, representing both tensile stress and compressive stress. If the stress becomes too great, that section breaks and disintegrates, possibly jeopardizing the entire structure.

Calling all architecture, construction and physics-based puzzle enthusiasts to stand up and get problem solving! Cargo Bridge 2 is a fun and challenging bridge-building game where you have to design and build a series of sturdy bridges that are capable of supporting the weight of Cargo Charlie (a very hard working freight handler) and his many crates and boxes. In this online brain-teaser for kids, teens and grown-ups, your buddy Cargo Charlie has to transport various pieces of cargo across a treacherous ravine. The problem is that there is simply no bridge to help him to cross. That’s where your valuable engineering expertise comes into play! Skillfully design and construct an architecturally-solid bridge to bear the load of Charlie and his Cargo, and get them safely across the ravine, back to Charlie's home.

This difficult building activity requires the patience and tenacity of a lion, and the task becomes trickier as you progress and the ravine gets wider. There is plenty of trial and error required to keep your bridge stable enough to withstand Charlie’s dangerous trip across. If you are a budding young architect, builder or engineer of the future, you will be impressed by the intricate construction skills required – with support beams, columns, and load-bearing structures all essential to a solid bridge. The question is, have you got the essential skills it takes to become a Master Bridge Builder? Your answer could be - we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it!

How to Play: In each of the increasingly difficult levels, your goal is to build a bridge across the ravine that will successfully stay upright, and withstand the weight of diligent Cargo Charlie as he crosses over to retrieve his precious crates and boxes. Charlie has to cross the bridge twice – once to collect the cargo, and again to bring it back to his house. You start each level on a blueprint-style drawing of the area where you have to carefully design your bridge.

Using your computer mouse or touchpad, click and drag from any of the circular points located on either side of the ravine. This creates a beam/column, depending on which direction you drag (A beam is a horizontal or diagonal support structure, a column is a vertical support). It’s not as easy as dragging all the way across to create a single beam over the ravine – you have to attach various beams and columns together to create a solid structure. Each time you create a new beam/column, a new circular ‘joint’ appears. This can be used as a new point to continue building from. Each beam/column you create costs virtual money, the total of which is indicated in the top right corner. If you want to delete a column/beam during the Design Stage, click on the Eraser on the right of the game screen, then click on the beam/column you want to get rid of.

Once you are happy with your design, click on the Arrow in the top left corner of the game screen to test out the bridge (alternatively, hit the Return Key on your keyboard). Once you click the Arrow, you are brought to the actual level, and your bridge will be in place. If its a well-made structure, it should remain upright across the ravine. However, if it is flimsy and not strong enough, it will collapse. If this happens, click on the ‘Redesign Bridge’ button in the top left corner (alternatively, hit the ESC Key).

If the bridge seems solid and upright, hover your mouse over Charlie, and Left Click to set him on his way. If he successfully crosses the bridge and reaches the cargo, click on him again to make him bring the load of goods back to his home on the left side of the ravine. If he makes it back safely across, you progress to the next level. If the bridge breaks and he falls, and it’s back to the drawing board! Tip: To create the sturdiest possible bridge, try and give it a solid foundation with triangular arrangements of diagonal and horizontal beams. This should hopefully give Charlie the necessary support that he needs.
